Ultimate Flag Football – Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q

Is this traditional flag football?

A

No, this is a semi-contact football league with helmets and shoulder pads. There will be contact, but the tackle will take place by de-flagging the competitive athlete.

Q

What are the ages/divisions?

A

CLYFL and LYFA go by the current school year for placing the athletes. Here is the list of available divisions:

D: K - 2nd

C: 3rd - 4th

B: 5th - 6th

A7: 7Th

A8: 8th

Q

How many athletes per team?

A

We expect to field teams of 12 athletes per team.

Q

Who will we play?

A

Games will be played against other CLYFL and LYFA teams in their same division.

Q

Is this a full-size field?

A

No, games on a half a game field - playing two games on each side of the field at a time. The “game field” is 40 yards.

Q

Are there 11 active players on the field during live play?

A

No, it is “8 on 8” format. 8 on offense, 8 on defense. 3 lineman per Offense and Defense with 5 “skill” positions on each side of the ball.

Q

Do I need a current physical to play in this league?

A

Yes, your current year physical will be satisfactory. Otherwise, you will need to have a physical completed prior to participating. Physical Consent Form

Q

What are the expectations for Practice?

A

We understand that Spring is historically reserved for other sports and activities, therefore we expect coaches will practice at least 2 time per week in the “pre-season”. Once games start, practices will shift to once per week.

Q

When do you expect games to be played?

A

Games will be played on Sundays.

Q

Are there weight restrictions (red dots) like in the Fall?

A

No

Q

Will there be blocking and rushing (running the ball instead of passing)?

A

Yes. Most of the common elements of tackle football are incorporated.  Blocking, running, passing, Defensive line, defensive secondary are all elements to this program.  The major difference is that the tackling will take place via de-flagging the opponent.

Q

What equipment is included with the fee?

A

Ultimate flag players will be issued a game jersey and the following equipment to be turned back in at the end of the season. This includes helmet, shoulder pads, and flags.

Q

How much is registration?

A

Registration is managed by each participating league. Please check with your appropriate LYFA member league. For the 2021 season, Ultimate Flag Registration is $250 per child in 3rd-8th grade, and $125 for players in K-2nd grade. If you register before January 15th, 2022, you will get $50 off registration!

Q

What other equipment do I need to have?

A

You’ll need to provide your athlete with a mouthguard and appropriate lower attire, such as shorts, cleats and a protective athletic cup.

Q

Can my athlete participate in a different age/grade group than what his/her actual age/grade is?

A

An athlete may "play up" a level but may not "play down". It is highly recommended that the athletes play with their actual age/grade group. A player may only play up 1 age/grade group.

Q

Are there minimum play or participation rules?

A

In Ultimate flag, it is expected that each player is on the playing field for approximately half of the game at a minimum.

Q

Do you offer refunds?

A

Yes, if it is before the first practice.

Q

How do I become a coach?

A

CLYFL is always looking for coaches who love kids and are looking to make a difference in their life. You can select you interest when registering you athlete, or email the league at

Middle School Division – Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q

What middle school teams are represented in CLYFL

A

Currently, we are fielding 7th and 8th grade teams from Belmont Ridge Middle School, Harper Park, Simpson, and Smarts Mill. If you want to enroll another school into this, please email us at

Q

Does my middle school athlete need to “bring their own team” to play in the league?

A

No, we will still offer the traditional sign-up and draft for your athlete. This is the same process we will use for our fall tackle league

Q

Are these LCPS middle schools affiliated with CLYFL?

A

No, being on the middle school team has nothing to do with LCPS. This is just a way of having the athletes play with their classmates against their friends form the surrounding schools.

Q

Why is a 6th grade middle school team not an option?

A

Our B-League LYFA leagues run as 5th and 6th grade. Entering a complete team of 6th grade athletes would give a major competitive advantage to the other 5th and 6th grade teams.
